Fair Quilts

I always love a quilt show, no matter how big or small. And, the quilts on display at the Pend Oreille County Fair were once again fabulous this year. As a long-time lover of the 1930s reproduction prints, this quilt caught my eye early. The prints are pieced with what appears to be a similar reproduction muslin and don't you just love that little border?!
All the quilts on display have a short story written and displayed with them. This quilt was a collection of vintage blocks a woman inherited. The white outer ring is quite unique.
The blocks were all hand pieced and varied greatly in finished size. So, the owner and a friend decided to applique them onto a yellow background. They simply turned the edges under and used a machine applique stitch around the edges. The story states that most of the fabrics are scraps from shirts and dresses from the family in the 1940s.
I love the scrappy quality of this sawtooth quilt and how the neutral white is pieced together to make a ragged sort of star. I just wish it had some sort of border to save the design from stopping so abruptly at the binding.
The bargello table topper won for best tablecloth. I really like the fact that it isn't a sqaure or rectangle and seems alive. It was displayed directly under a skylight and near a doorway. I just couldn't get a good shot with all the bright streaming natural light but I'm sure you can appreciate it.
The photo below is a detail shot of the raffle quilt. This shows about 1/4 of the quilt top surface and doesn't do it justice at all. It was wonderfully done and yes, the entire thing was put together using corner piecing! Sadly I didn't win this year.
I'm saving some unique and related quilt photos for my next post.
