These pink ribbon blocks will be incorporated into a quilt to utilize as a fundraiser at my workplace. We are raising money and awareness to help our small, rural hospital purchase a digital mammography machine and I'd like to recruit a very wide range of involvement from quilters everywhere.
This is a fundraiser for the non-profit organization Newport Hospital & Health Services Foundation in Newport, WA. The first step will be to collect blocks, preferably with signatures, dates and locations included by their makers. The signatures could be to personalize the blocks for the quilter, to memorialize a loved one lost to breast cancer or to honor a survivor.
If you are interested in making and submitting a block to our cause, the pattern was designed by Janet Wickell of About.com. The pattern is free and the finished block measures 6" wide by 7" tall. I whipped up 10 blocks in just under two hours.
The blocks displayed here will be personalized by breast cancer survivors who are current residents of the hospital's long-term care unit and a local assisted living complex.
I am using scrappy pieces of WOW and pinks - from mauve to pastel to electric - that I can find in my stash. As with most of my quilty endeavors, the more variety in color and pattern the better!
We plan to raffle the quilt in October, to coordinate with national Cancer Awareness Month activities. Tickets are $1 each, or one ticket for every block submitted. We are planning a breast cancer awareness activity at the hospital the third week of the month to include a tour of our radiology department and the location the new mammography machine will occupy and a pink party.
If you have read this far and are interested in participating, whip up a block, rememer to sign, date and indicate your location (city, state/country) and send it to NHHS Foundation, 714 W Pine Street, Newport, WA 99156. If you still have questions, email me at clyons-holestine@phd1.org. And, if you want a chance to win send in a block or $1 each for the number of tickets you want.
This is a year-long campaign. To date, we have raised nearly $50,000 with a variety of activities, including a holiday tree auction, a golf tournament, pink rodeo t-shirts and a fun run.
