Artistic inspiration

Walking to my son's 5th grade classroom recently, my attention was captured by the display of their latest art project. I had to run back out to the car and grab my camera.
A large portion of the hallways is covered with these wonderful, creative and colorful mini-design walls. The assignment is intended to teach color value and design placement. They have a design pattern to follow, but can create any secondary design of their choice. These 10- and 11-year-olds had to complete this in the classroom in one day during as individual academic assessment process.
The image above, dominated in purples, light blue and shades of orange is my son's creation. It didn't turn out as he had imagined, but mostly because he forgot to turn some of the blocks the right direction to carry out the secondary design.
Each of the 36 blocks are 2" square and each had to be created individually. They could use colored pencils, markers, water color paints, etc. They had to use what was available in their desks that day. I was fairly impressd with the two images, above and below. These were well thought out, very detailed and just show an artists ability for thinking beyond the simple task at hand.
It is sad that art, and so many other important classes, are being removed from our public schools. I truly think exposure to art is important as well as the experience of creating something that is uniquely your own. I spoke with the teacher and this was a very difficult task for many students as they are used to "instant gratification" in so many aspects of their lives and this required thought, effort, concentration and a considerable amount of time.

This is awesome. Totally incredible! I am so impressed. She must be a really great art teacher that they all were able to do it so well.

I am in total agreement about art classes not being on the chopping block and wish so much that art teachers were funded as well as football coaches!

Thanks for sharing!
